The article titled Student Perception about Peer-Assisted Learning Sessions in a Medical School in Nepal by Shankar et al (2001) [1], is a research article rather a than a case report. However, the format of the abstract and the article itself do not follow the format of a research article, due to the lack of methods, results and discussion section (IMRAD), while there are parts of the article that can be considered as Methods, Results and Discussion. Moreover, there is a part that can be regarded as the conclusion, but it is not explicitly written [1].

The authors stated that they did not “come across descriptions of PAL in Nepal in the literature on doing a Pubmed and Google scholar search” [1]. However, Pubmed Central (PMC) search using peer, assisted, learning, and Nepal as keywords showed an article titled Musculoskeletal Training for Orthopaedists and Nonorthopaedists, where the objectives of the training are realized by some approaches, one of which is “Peer example: a 1:1 student/preceptor ratio per year is the set standard so the student has the advantage of close guidance through the course of his training” [2]. Therefore, the article is not the first article concerning peer assisted learning in Nepal. Moreover, peer instructor was previously shown by others to be as effective as approved clinical instructor, and had an advantage in the presence of less pressure, embarrassment, and anxiety in performing psychomotor skills, though peer instructors was not suggested to replace approved clinical instructors in initial instruction. Peer instructors may be used in practice to reinforce and review the initial instruction to get a psychomotor skill in orthopedic assessment [3].

Table 1 and 2 shows total and overall median scores according to the gender and method of financing of medical education, and there were no significant differences in the scores according to gender or method of financing [1]. These data does not support the conclusion that states “The feedback suggests that peer teaching can be an effective method of learning” [1]. Moreover, there are no data concerning the scores obtained from students with peer teacher compared to those with approved teacher assisted session, or the scores obtained from students enrolled in peer assisted learning compared to those who did not as was done in a study [4].

In conclusion, this article needs revisions especially in the conclusion section and needs formatting to a research article format.

Peer assisted learning; a concept of student teaching the other student helps both the groups to develop teaching and learning skills in an effective way. The collaborative group discussion that is involved in this method fosters better learning removing all the hindrance that are otherwise encountered in regular class room teaching. This also brings out leaders among the student groups.

This is a good initiation taken up the author and his team to study the concept of PAL in medical training in developing nation. This work highlights the need of such learning modules as suggested by the student community.

This is a very important piece of work especially for the medical educators in developing country. The use of peer assisted learning is still at infancy stage in many medical schools in Asia due to the lack of published studies on it's effectiveness and feedback from the students themselves. This paper manage to highlight the needs from the students persectives which can help the educators to tailor made the requirement for encouraging peer assisted learning process.I will recommend the paper to publish as it is.
