Brief Biography:


Dr Basma Ellahi MIFST, Reg Nutr (Public Health) Basma is a Reader in Nutrition and Health on secondment to the Faculty of Health and Social Care until August 2016. Basma was former Head of Department of Clinical Sciences and Nutrition and Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Chester. During her tenure as Head of Clinical Sciences and Nutrition, Basma managed a portfolio of successful Masters and Undergraduate programmes with nutrition and physical activity in health and disease and associated clinical and non clinical staff. Basma’s decision to take a break from management of busy academics departments allows her to focus on her long standing and established interest in food, nutrition and health and to publish some of her work in this field. Basma’s current work extends to Africa and she is presently involved in the nutrition capacity building agenda and a number of nutrition projects looking at the link between diet and physical activity and chronic diseases. Basma is an elected member of the Association for Nutrition (AfN) UK and recently appointed as Council Member and Trustee for the AfN, a role in which she hopes she is able to assist in furthering the work of the Association in relation to the professional development of Nutritionists. In 2011, Basma was awarded the Academic of the Year in the UK’s diaspora awards held by Asian Lite for her contribution to nutrition and the community through her work as an academic, a sphere she continues to work in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Qualifications BSc Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (upper second class) University of Leeds 1992 MSc Food Science, University of Leeds 1993 (funded by bursary from AFRC) PhD, Food Policy, University of Bradford, 1998 (funded by ESRC) Modern Food Biotechnology: How the UK Food Industry Addresses the Policy Issues – An analysis of the impact of genetic modification techniques on the food production policies of the UK food industry. PG Cert Teaching and Learning University of Teesside 2001 Insert picture – use the existing picture --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Basma joined the University of Chester in 2003 to lead on developments in nutrition education and support the delivery of the Nutrition and Dietetics programmes leading to registration in Dietetics (commissioned by Health England North West) which she managed over two headship tenures. Basma led the successful Association for Nutrition accredited MSc in Public Health Nutrition as Programme Leader for almost 9 years. During this time she supervised a large number of PHN students for Dissertations thesis based on externally tendered and funded projects linked to her own research experience. Clinical Sciences and Nutrition Department has a number of successful programmes taught in the UK, Dublin and Mumbai by blended learning and in country delivery. Basma was involved in more recent curriculum developments leading to the validation of a BSc in Osteopathy delivered in Dublin at the Irish College of Osteopathic Medicine and a successful MSc in Neuromuscular Therapy. Basma has over fifteen years higher education experience during which she has been a programme leader, deputy head of department and served on several internal and external committees. Basma has also undertaken a number of externally commission consultancy (income generation) projects, for her former employers, which included food industry training, food safety management and HACCP/audit projects, food product development and labelling with a turnover of circa £100K. Basma has been external examiner for a number of UK universities and includes obesity and nutrition at the University of Leeds, and undergraduate programmes in food, nutrition and health at the University of Bournemouth and Manchester Metropolitan University. Basma has led curriculum development and quality management of programmes which have been accredited by the IFST and Nutrition Society and BDA/HPC. Basma is an active participant in the developments relating to the development of a defined profession, a portfolio assessor for the Association of Nutrition, a member of the Course Accreditation Committee (Association of Nutrition) and a member of the African Nutrition Society. She is a long standing member of the Nutrition Society and was elected theme leader for Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health. Basma’s research interests have developed from her work with the food industry and community work. Her PhD studies led to The United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs extending an invitation to attend the US Biotechnology, Genetically Modified Organisms International Visitors Programme held in Washington DC and St Louis, Missouri USA (April 2000). Her current research interests are varied and include community food and nutrition projects and nutritional health of BAME communities, evaluation which in part stems from her own experience of running community based projects. Her PhD research examined food policy issues in the UK. Basma’s preferred research methodology is qualitative but she has successfully supervised a number of projects in the UK and Ghana, Sierra Leone and Pakistan. She has successfully supervised PhD and MPhil students and has examined PhD thesis at other Universities in the UK. Basma’s recent position as Reader in Nutrition and Health is a secondment to the Faculty of Health and Social Care until August 2016.
