Brief Biography:

My nursing education began with a Diploma from Baptist Memorial Hospital System in San Antonio, followed by a BSN/MSN from University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio. My specialty areas are Public Health and Administration. I moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 2007 to teach Adult Medical- Surgical Nursing at the Del Mar College School of Nursing. In 2009, I began coursework towards a PhD in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University in Denton. My research interest is homeless Vietnam Veterans, who although the Veterans Administration provides healthcare services, they do not utilize them. Since there are identified barriers, I am developing a grounded theory as to why this phenomenon exists and continues. In 2011, I returned to the Austin, TX area to teach at Texas State University, School of Nursing. Predominantly, I work with students who struggle to grasp the concepts and apply the knowledge gained in Medical-Surgical Nursing courses. I also teach Community Health Nursing. In this course, I am researching the feasibility of incorporating virtual worlds, such as Second Life, into the nursing practicum. This year, along with Dr. Lolly Lockhart, we have begun the Be The Change For Patient Safety project, which is anticipated to be a 5-year project studying transformational, rather than transactional, leadership in hospitals, and offering consultations and learning modules for the Champion Teams. Five fellowships will be offered annually to nursing students
