Dr. Wilco Jacobs

Epidemiologist, Senior Scientist
The Health Scientist
Fraeylemastraat 13

Brief Biography:

I studied biomedical health sciences at the Radboud University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. I am specialized in clinical research in spinal surgery. Having worked more than ten years in musculoskeletal surgery, in Orthopedic an department and a neurosurgical department I have great experience in planning, designing, performing and reporting research in this area. At the department of neurosurgery I currently support the organisation and practice of research. I am also completing a PhD on research methodology in spinal surgery. In this thesis I will try to find answers on what the effect is of research methodology by means of meta-epidemiological studies.

Academic positions:

Epidemiologist, Senior scientist.

Research interests:

I am specialised in the methodology and practice of systematic literature reviews. Extensive experience has been gathered in Cochrane reviews, other reviews wincluding also observational designs and numerous support to reviewers in several fields.

At the department of Neurosurgery I am involved in nearly every aspect of the setup and support of scientific research on spinal interventions.

At the moment I am also working on a PhD thesis on the methodology of research and methodology of systematic reviews in spinal surgery. By means of meta-epidemiological studies we are investigating the influence of design on the result of primary studies and reviews.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

The concept of post-publication peer review is a valuable addition to the evolving world of science and might eventually replace the slow and in-transparent process of prepublication peer review. The concept matches my personal interest in broad cooperation and transparent and open attitude with colleages in the field. Together we are strong.
