Brief Biography:

I have a B.S. in Biology/Medical Technology from Indiana University and worked for many years in clinical laboratories as a medical microbiologist.

I have an M.S. in Biology from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have been involved  in college level teaching for over 14 years. I began my Oakland University teaching career in the Medical Laboratory Science Program of the School of Health Sciences in 2004, where I developed classes in Microbiology, Parasitology/Mycology, Molecular Genetics, and Molecular Pathology. While teaching in the MLS Program, I engaged in research with undergraduate students on antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli isolates from urinary tract infections. I recently served a two-year term as Vice-Chair of the Molecular Diagnostics and Genetics Scientific Assembly for the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), have been a member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) since 1993, and a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) since 1999.

I joined the OUWBSOM in the Fall of 2009, as a founding faculty member and Discipline Director for Microbiology and Immunology. In 2010 I was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure; and in 2011 became the first Chair of the Biomedical Sciences Department.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

I think that the concept of a truly Open Access site such as WebMedCentral is definitely needed. It will be so wonderful to have a single website where we can obtain information on medical subjects that might take days to find (and then only if we have access) by looking at dozens of other sites. In addition, having experts in the field contributing to this site makes it a vital resource.
