Dr. Chamin Morikawa

Brief Biography:


Chamin Morikawa completed the B.Sc.(Eng.) degree in computer engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1996 and served as a lecturer in the same university until 2001. He received the M. Eng. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in Frontier Informatics from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 2007.

Chamin has served as a researcher at ATR International (Japan) from 2002 to 2004, and the Intelligent Modeling Laboratory, the University of Tokyo, in 2007 and 2008. After working as a research associate at HP Labs Japan, he joined the Interfaculty Initiative of Information Sciences of the University of Tokyo, as an assistant professor.

His research interests are in multimedia analysis and retrieval, user interaction strategies for multimedia retrival and vision-based human computer interaction. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, and has served as a technical reviewer for the IEEE Computer Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications. In 2010, Chamin created "Pics 'n' Trails Dataset," the largest continuously archived lifelog dataset that is openly available for research.
