Onycholysis and Endodontics
Posted by Dr. William J Maloney on 07 Feb 2014 08:24:45 PM GMT Reviewed by Interested Peers

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The authors aim to present a case which shows the possibility of occupational onycholysis in an endodontist.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    No

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    No

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No- I do not think this would make for a good lecture or seminar.

  • Other Comments:

The authors state that dentists report more frequent and worse medical problems than other health care providers. Onycholysis is the separation of the nail plate from the nail bed or a complete nail plate loss.  The authors feel that the pressure of endodontic instruments was the cause of occupational onycholysis in the case presented in their article.

Title of the manuscript is brief and appropriate.

Length of the introduction and the literature review is an appropriate

Generally, poor writing style with some of grammatical/spelling errors Cumbersome with abbreviations. Points had to be come after references numbers in manuscript.

There are some mistakes in references. References had to be reorganized in light of webcentral ‘’Information for Authors’’

Other illness related with occupation had to be discussed in discussion.

‘’Figure’’ word might be used instead of ‘’illustiration’’ word in manuscript.

Conclusion section had to be author sentences, not to be refereneces.

Besides all critics, it has real theorical importance for our colleagues.

The article has been well written with few grammatical mistakes. It provides the latest on occupational hazard to the practicing dentists. The Article can be improved by provinding more data on the clinical information and lab investigations and treatment part. Otherwise, it is a nice and informative case.
