Review: The role of orthodontist in OSAS diagnosis during childhood
Posted by Mr. Troy Butler on 01 Nov 2017 02:58:17 PM GMT Reviewed by Interested Peers

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The paper aims to establish the role of orthodontists in OSAS detection during regular consultations, as well as pointing out signs an orthodontist should monitor for.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Orthodontics has historically been an intervention/treatment point in OSAS, and there are several case studies and articles detailing these treatments and interventions. Thus, in this respect, the information is not novel. However, the article’s aim is to inform readers of the intervention/screening orthodontists may provide in early detection of OSAS in the pediatric population, which is novel.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

This is more of a discussion/informative piece. The claims within the discussion, though, would be better supported if case studies where orthodontist intervention led to OSAS diagnosis were cited or mentioned within the respective section.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    N/A

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    N/A

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

While the claims in the paper are sensible, the paper has a stark lack of in-text citations and evidence. Evidence to the orthodontist’s role from case studies and previous articles would greatly strengthen the paper.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    No.

  • Other Comments:

There are a few grammatical errors dispersed throughout the paper that need to be addressed. But, more importantly, the lack of in-text evidence weakens the author‘s claims. Un-cited information needs to be addressed. Though the authors have experience and expertiese in this area, not all information presented is common knowledge and requires in-text evidence.
