Hyper and Hypothyroidism

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Left Ventricular Function in patients with hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and controls has been investigated by echocardiography at the beginning of treatment and six weeks later after initiation of treatment. This is important because in patients with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism changes in the left ventricular function have been observed as a result of miocardial alterations.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

No. Many reports are showing the same results.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

The protocol of the study is not presented very precisely

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Yes. It is not clear if the patients have taken any medicines besides those for hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. This is important because prescribing other drugs could affect the left ventricular function.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Increasing the number of patients in the study would make this investigation better and data more reliable.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No. The paper gives some additional knowledge related to the problem.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The paper dealt with left ventricular function evaluated in controls and patients suffering from hyper or hypothiroidism. They seems quite important.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

Results should be better analysed according other statistical evaluation, for example multivariate regression analysis.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

There are not so much important deviations from an eventual randomized controlled trial if provided.

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

The methodology is valid, although it needs a deep statistical revision

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

With other additional information the paper would be much more suitable for scientific literature.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Yes because it linked cardiovascular and endocrinological data on the basis of non-invasive assessment of cardiac function.

Title: “Noninvasive Evaluation of Left Ventricular Function in Patients with Hyper and Hypothyroidism”.

    Dear Editor,

We have read through the manuscript and we think that the manuscript seems to show important and major lacking news:

    1. English should be completely revised by a native English speaker.
    2. The abstract had no conclusions. Please provide.
    3. In the abstract, results are not corroborated by numbers, nor by statistics. Please provide p values and numbers able to better describe authors’ findings.
    4. Introduction section had not been provided. This makes the study not identifiable in a well prescribed field. We have no background about the meaning of the text and even aims are obscure. Please provide a more structured background section.
    5. No data had been provided for cardiovascular risk profile of the patients and controls enrolled. Were they hypertensive, dyslipidemic, diabetic, smokers?
    6. The authors considered patients on treatment for their own thyroid disease. The indications of drugs kind and dosage and the presence of other confounding drugs should be indicated.
