Formalin Effects on Nose and Throat
Posted by Dr. William J Maloney on 15 Sep 2012 09:17:50 PM GMT

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The main purpose of this article is to demonstarte that contact with formalin causes decrease of smell sense and increase of runny nose and sore throat.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    No

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    No

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

Yes, it would be a great course for individuals involved with research.

  • Other Comments:

Formalin is a genotoxicant.  Formalin causes bronchitis, cough, respiratory tract obstruction, and asthma. Training of employees working with formalin on the importance of ventilation is recommended.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Exposure to formalin effects upper respiratory system. Claims are very importanat with respect to occupational health.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Claims are novel but particularly.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The results depend on subjective symptoms, thus these results are not enough to support the claims. At least smell tests are needed in order to support such claims.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    No protocol is provided

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

Although the methodology is valid it is not enough to support the claims. Objective biological tests or smell tests seem to be essential for such a study.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Upper respiratory tract biopsy and smell test administered to subject can improve the paper

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    After revision may be.

  • Other Comments:

Statistical analysis are not mentioned properly in the materials and methods section

    Paper needs language editing

Questionnaires asking subjective symptoms are not enough and this method is not that scientific. Further methods such as upper respiratory tract biopsy and smell test are needed to support the claims

References are not stated properly in the text. Depending only in this issue the manuscript may be rejected.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Exposure to formalin has negative effects on nose and throat function. The claims are very important considering the health implications in today's society where formalin exposure is increasingly prevalent.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Not particularly novel or well supported.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes, well enough.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

No, more direct biological testing and smell testing is required.

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

The methodology is valid but further methods are needed to support strong claims.

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Yes, test olfactory epithelium biopsy samples and admnister standardized smell tests to subjects.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

No, it is good work but needs much more of a biological and standardized test basis to make it outstanding.
