Dr. Pramod Shinde

Research Professor
Institute of Nano-Biotechnology, Ewha Womans University

Brief Biography:

I have obtained B. Pharmacy degree from University of Pune, M. Pharm. degree from Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, followed by Ph. D. from Pusan National University, Korea. I have worked on discovery of bioactive secondary metabolites from Marine invertebrates during doctoral studies. Presently I am working on microbial biotechnology projects focusing on generation of novel bioactive analogues employing biosynthetic pathway engineering and combinatorial biosynthesis methods.

Academic positions:

03/2009 till date: Research Professor/Postdoctoral Fellow Center for Intelligent Nano-Bio Materials, Institute of Nano-Biotechnology, Ewha Womans University, Seoul (South Korea). 03/2008 to 02/2009: Postdoctoral researcher College of Pharmacy, Pusan National University, Busan (South Korea). 08/2002 to 08/2003: Research Associate Zandu Foundation for Healthcare, Mumbai (India).

Research interests:

Natural Products Drug Discovery: Potential drug leads from marine and terrestrial resources (microorganisms, sponges, corals, tunicate, starfish, etc) i. Conventional bioassay-guided fractionation from unexplored materials: Extraction followed by repeated chromatographic techniques and then identification of novel metabolites using 1D (1H and 13C) and 2D (COSY, HSQC, HMBC, ROESY, NOESY, TOCSY) NMR, MS/MS, and HR-MS data ii. Genomics-guided approaches to identify novel drugs from microbes: Identification of NRPS and PKS gene clusters using available genomics data of microorganisms and commercial softwares and then correlation with possible structural scaffolds, followed by conventional natural product isolation Natural Products Biosynthesis: Elucidation of biosynthetic pathway i. Combinatorial biosynthesis to prepare chemically diverse libraries of the interesting molecules followed by screening for biological activities. ii. Biosynthetic pathway and metabolic engineering iii. Functional analysis of important enzymes from the biosynthetic pathways Chemical ecology: Microbe-plant, microbe-marine invertebrate, and microbe-insect symbiosis i. Microorganisms have been often found to be in symbiosis with plants, marine invertebrates, and insects. Selecting such interesting symbiotic systems and searching for chemical mediators responsible for communication. ii. Study of the symbiotic assemblage in natural environment and finding out the secondary metabolites.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

The most important idea is open access and fast publication of the research articles. Presently scientific publication usually need very long time which sometimes take out the whole efforts of the scientists. The policy of the WebMed Central to publish the researhc articel followed by peer review can be a great alternative to present publishing methodology.
