Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cellbiology (MTC), Karolinska Institutet
Nobelsväg 16

Brief Biography:

Laszlo Szekely gained his degree in medicine in 1988 from Debrecen's medical university. That same year he was awarded the Weszpremi medal as the best medical student at the university. He moved to Sweden in 1988 and to a research post with Prof. George Klein at the former department of tumour biology at the Karolinska Institute. 1989-1995 worked on the molecular biology of tumor suppressor proteins Rb and p53 with special reference of their involment in cell differentiation and gamma herpes virus mediated B cell transformation. In 1993 he moved over to a research position at MTC. He gained his PhD in 1995 at Karolinska Institutet. Between 1996 and 1997 he did his postdoc financed by the Swedish Cancer Society, and then another post as a cancer researcher from 1997 to 2003. In 2000 he became an associate professor at Karolinska Institutet. Between 2003 and 2009 he was employed as a project leader at the Center for Integrative Recognition in the Immune System (IRIS), and he also had a research post at SSF Center of Excellence at the Royal Institute of Technology. Since this year he has also worked as a technical consultant at the Karolinska Visualization Core Facility (KIVIF). In 2010 he became a senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet. Laszlo Szekely was appointed professor of haematological malignant diseases at Karolinska Institutet in 2010. He has over 90 publications of which 86 were cited 3133 times by 2013-03-01. What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

Excellent idea. Good science requires uninhibited flow of information, unrestricted access to the latest results and ideas. At the age of the web based social medias the traditional publication systems appear to be more and more outdated. The quality of the research should be measured by the reproducibility of the results and not by the percieved prestige of the journal where the data are published. Reader feedback is more important than pre-publication peer review with its many flaws (e.g. see comments at J. of Biology 2009, 8:24) New type of research constellations, new mixtures of interdisciplinary collaborative efforts and the ever increasing role of in silico analysis of publicly available data also requires a new and flexible formats of publishing.
