Dr. Niren Angle

Brief Biography:


Dr.Angle has a very diverse background, having been born in India and growing up in Bombay till he was 12 when he moved to the United States with his parents. He attended medical school at one of the best medical schools in the country, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. Following this, he trained in General Surgery at UC San Diego, under Dr.A.R. Moossa as Chairman,for a total of seven years, two of which were spent as a Research Fellow in the Shock and Trauma Immunology Laboratory. During this time, Dr.Angle was very active, presenting and publishing several basic science and clinical research papers, regarding the relationship of the immune response to shock and modulation of this immune response with different resuscitation fluids, such as hypertonic saline. Following his General Surgery residency, he went on to fellowship training at UCLA in Vascular Surgery for two years. He joined the faculty at UCLA following his fellowship training and soon thereafter, was recruited to UC San Diego in 2002. Dr.Angle then went on to become Chief of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery at UCSD and the Director of the Vascular Ultrasound laboratory till 2010. During these years, in addition to a busy clinical practice, he published several articles in both the basic sciences and clinical realm as well, particularly regarding carotid disease, aortic aneurysms, as well as important papers regarding the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the interaction between different cell types in blood vessels. Dr.Angle is also in the United States Air Force Reserves and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, USAFR, MC. He thoroughly enjoys serving in the military and it is a busy complement to his civilian life. Currently, Lt.Col. Angle is the Chief of Hospital Services and the Surgical Section at the 752d MDS at March Air Reserve Base, California. Complex cases and challenging issues are his passion and he is skilled, trained, and experienced in complex and advanced surgical and endovascular therapy. He believes that compassion for the patient is an oft-ignored quality. In his view, exceptional competence is the greatest form of compassion for the patient. Surgery above all is an art and a science, even more so than medicine, and it is this art that makes every patient unique and interesting.
