Brief Biography:

Dr Gama de Abreu received his medical degree from the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), and the electronic engineer and master in sciences in biomedical engineering degrees from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. He received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Heidelberg and the PhD degree from the Dresden University of Technology, Germany.  He is a Diplomate of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA).

Dr. Gama de Abreu has published extensively. He has authored or co-authored over 180 peer-reviewed journal articles, case reports, editorials, abstracts and book chapters. Doctor Gama de Abreu is author of several patents in the field of respiration and mechanical ventilation. He performs reviews for several prestigious journals including Anesthesiology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, Respiration, Intensive Care Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Critical Care, and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Gama de Abreu has made numerous presentations and been invited lecturer on several occasions. He has also attended several National and International meetings as a speaker.

Academic positions:

Dr Gama de Abreu is Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Dresden University of Technology, Germany. He is also Vice-Director Head of Research and Head of the Pulmonary Engineering Group.

Dr. Gama de Abreu is an active member of many professional societies, including the European Society for Anaesthesiology, European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and German Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care. He is chairman of the Subcommittee Respiration and appointed member of the Research Committee of the European Society for Anaesthesiology.

Research interests:

Dr Gama de Abreu's main research activity is focused on the impact of mechanical ventilation on lung function and damage, both in anesthesia and intensive care. Dr Gama de Abreu has made important contributions to the understanding of mechanisms of assisted spontaneous breathing and the development of new modes of mechanical ventilation. He has been conducting and coordinating different clinical trials in the field of mechanical ventilation.
