Dr. Joao Paulo

Harvard Medical School
320 Longwood Ave/Enders1126

Brief Biography:

I am currently an instructor mentored by Drs. Darwin Conwell of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Hanno Steen at Children’s Hospital Boston. My general area of interest is proteomics-based translational research and my research is focused on identifying protein biomarkers of chronic pancreatitis in endoscopically collected pancreatic fluid.
I perform mass spectrometry-based proteomic experiments to better understand the pathogenesis of acute and chronic pancreatitis. In addition, I am focusing on unraveling the molecular mechanisms of inflammation and fibrosis in chronic pancreatitis. These investigations will have tremendous clinical and research implications for pancreatic disease and may serve to progress the development of methods for the early diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis, and for targeted therapy designed to stop or slow the progression of acute and chronic pancreatitis.
As a member of one of the few research groups investigating the proteomics of chronic pancreatitis, I have co-written several manuscripts on sample preparation of pancreatic fluid for proteomic analysis, as well as a review on proteomics of pancreatic fluid and book chapter on body fluid proteomics. I am currently in the process of preparing manuscripts for investigations on pancreatic stellate cell activation, as well as a larger manuscript which has uncovered potential biomarkers of chronic pancreatitis.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

Great concept of post-publication peer reveiw.  Leads to open discussion and dialogues concerning scientiifc publishing.
