Brief Biography:


Joseph V. Pergolizzi, Jr., MD, is a senior partner in the Naples Anesthesia and Pain Associates Group of Southwest Florida, chairman of the Abstract and Poster Selection Committee for PAINWeek, and a member of the CHANGE PAIN Board. Dr. Pergolizzi’s research interests focus on acute and chronic pain in adults with a particular focus on pain in the elderly. In the past, Dr. Pergolizzi held positions including the co-founder and chairman of the board for the Association of Chronic Pain Patients, a member of the board of directors and treasurer for the Coalition for Pain Education (COPE), co-founder and director of research at the International Pain Research and Treatment Foundation, and a member of the board of directors of the National Institute of Pain. Dr. Pergolizzi has held various adjunct and/or part-time academic positions and faculty over the past decade. He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, platform presentations and book chapters in his areas of interest and expertise.

Earning his BS in physical chemistry from St. Johns University and an MD with highest honors from Ross University School of Medicine, Dr. Pergolizzi completed his residency in anesthesia at Georgetown University School of Medicine and a clinical research fellowship in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Pergolizzi is the author of over 100 peer reviewed articles, abstracts, platform presentations and book chapters in his areas of interest and expertise, recent publications include a chapter in Shorten and Carr’s

Postoperative Pain Management: An Evidence-Based Guide to Practice and publications on the use of pharmacologic treatment of severe chronic pain. He is an internationally recognized expert in pain medicine, anesthesia, internal medicine, clinical research, and drug discovery. Additionally, he is a regularly sought after and requested lecturer at major medical schools, health systems, and national medical symposia throughout the United States and Europe. He is Editor-in-Chief of The Clinical Researcher, is an editorial board member/reviewer for many scientific journals including JAMA, Pain Practice, Experimental Medicine, The Scientific World Journal of Anesthesia, Journal of Medicine, and the American Journal of Managed Care, and is an invited feature editor of Pain Medicine. Dr. Pergolizzi has participated as a member of the Food and Drug Administration’s Roundtable for the Safe Use Imitative program focusing of drug safety in the elderly. He has been awarded the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award with Commendation and is a member of the Who’s Who for International Executives. He has served as a member of advisory boards and medical/scientific societies, and has acted on a number of institutional committees including the Medical Errors Committee and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Dr. Pergolizzi is recognized by his peers as a scientific and medical expert who integrates new technologies into everyday clinical practice. He has been investigating the effectiveness, safety, and utility of various interventions for patients with acute and chronic pain for several years.
