Dr. Rosana Ferreira

Brief Biography:

I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Microbiology and Immunology at The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2000. At the same university I received my Master's degree in Microbiology in 2002. During my Bachelor's and Master's I performed research in nosocomial infections, particularly in the development of techniques that could be used in clinical routine laboratories to identify strains of Staphylococcus and detect resistance to antimicrobials. After successfully finishing my Master's I decided to pursue a PhD in the laboratory of Dr. McCarter at The University of Iowa, United States. There I worked with V. parahaemolyticus as a model organism to understand the genetic regulation involved the adaptation of this organism to live in liquid environment and on surfaces. During that time I also had an opportunity to work with Dr. Peter Greenberg at University of Washington as a visiting graduate student. The opportunity to work in quorum sensing regulation in V. fisheri. After graduating at The University of Iowa I started a post-doctoral position at University of British Columbia, Canada at Dr. Brett Finlay' s laboratory. Here I have been working for the past 3.5 years in a few projects that involve expertise in different areas, such as microbiology, immunology and molecular biology. My studies here involve the development of vaccines against Salmonella and E. coli, important gastrointestinal pathogens. Furthermore, I have been working in the determining the role of the intestinal microbiota in the pathology caused by Salmonella using an animal model. Currently my interests include molecular biology techniques, vaccine development and intestinal microbiota.

What I think of the idea behind WebmedCentral:

I think that the idea of post publication review is very interesting and cutting edge. I believe the new concept will provide more transparency and fairness to the current peer-review process.
