http://www.webmedcentral.com/article_view/1249
Pregnancies achieved in one clinic by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and resulting in boys between 2000 and 2009 were reviewed. There were significant differences between the IVF and ICSI pregnancies, with the mothers of the ICSI boys being significantly younger at the time of embryo transfer (p<0.05) and the ICSI boys being significantly heavier than their IVF counterparts (p<0.01). There was a trend towards an increased incidence of abnormalities in boys after ICSI (18/326; 5.5%) compared with IVF (8/309; 2.6%) though this did not reach significance, a higher proportion of urogenital abnormalities after ICSI, and an increased number of abnormalities after ICSI in males compared to females. The data would support the need for further follow-up studies and continued vigilance. National regulatory authorities would seem ideally placed to gather such data, but they should differentiate between sex of the offspring when reporting on pregnancy outcomes following assisted reproduction.text/html2012-03-31T08:25:54+01:00http://www.webmedcentral.com/Dr. Michael BrachPainful Movements and Mobility after Urological Surgery: Studying the Feasibility of Pre-operative Exercise, A New Mobility Test and a Randomised Controlled Trial Protocol with Cystectomy Patients in Intensive Care [ISRCTN32898285]
http://www.webmedcentral.com/article_view/3102
Background: Cystectomy and ileal neobladder are standard procedures in bladder cancer treatment. Regaining mobility quickly after surgery, however, is aggravated by the facts that median laparotomy is used to access the abdomen, and that there are severe tissue violations during surgery. These result in post-operative movement-related pain and in restrictions of functional mobility. Movement patterns, which were self-evident before surgery, cause severe pain or even cannot be performed. Motor exercise with urological patients, before they undergo surgery, seems to be helpful to overcome such restrictions faster. Thus, regeneration could be supported. Methods: We planned a randomised controlled trial to study the effects of patient education based on the Viv-Arte conception, a kinesthetic mobilisation framework. In addition, we designed a new mobility test (MOTPA – Mobility Test for Patients in Acute Care) for subtle discrimination of the regeneration progress. The target group included patients scheduled for cystectomy in an intensive care setting. The primary outcomes were functional mobility (MOTPA), pain (visual analog scale) and post-surgical hospital residence time (intensive and general care units). Conclusions: Preliminary results show that the study design and the test are feasible. In-depth data analysis is to be published. Expanding the field of application of both training and test is to be discussed. http://www.webmedcentral.com/article_view/4969
Background
Some people think that children’s world is full of games and free from any tension. However, children might feel mental and emotional pressure due to different stressors. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the stress symptoms among students in elementary school in Kashan, Iran.
Methods
A cross sectional study, was conducted on 130 girl students in the first to sixth grade of a primary school in Kashan. Data collection instrument was the children’s stress symptom scale designed by Sharrer and RyanWenger. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics by absolute numbers and percentages.
Results
Of all items in the questionnaire, fast heart beating, being afraid, Stomachache, worry, bad temper, crying, feeling sad, face blushing and warmness, weakness, early agitation, muscle stiffness, and embarrassment and shame were reported in more than 70% percent of students.
Conclusions
Findings showed that stress symptoms are prevalent among school age children. Stress may affect on the students learning and achievement. Then, teachers should be familiar with stress symptoms in children and pay more attention in students with stress symptoms. Moreover, School nurses should be employed to help diagnosis and treating the stress symptoms in students.text/html2016-07-21T09:32:56+01:00http://www.webmedcentral.com/Ms. Deepa PrinceEffectiveness of oil masage on weight gain among pre-term neonates in selected pediatric hospitals, Hyderabad
http://www.webmedcentral.com/article_view/5167
Improved technology and treatment modalities have enhanced the outcomes of pre-term infants yet have increased the days they spend in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, thus are subjected to a highly stressful environment and to intensive invasive and painful treatments necessary for their survival. The aim of the study was to assess weight gain without the therapeutic intervention of oil massage among pre-term neonates. 60 Pre-term Neonates, recruited from Fernandez Hospital, Hyderguda through simple random sampling. The investigator has prepared a tool with two sections. Part A: Demographic characteristics of pre-term babies, Part B: Fenton’s Growth Chart. 29 (96.7%)pre – term babies in the control group gained low weight (0gms – 100gms) and 1 (3.3%) gained moderate weight (101gms – 200gms) while 18 (60.0%)pre – terms in the experimental group gained moderate weight and 11 (36.%) gained high weight gain (201gms – 300gms). The study concluded that Oil application has a potential to improve weight gain and cause less weight loss in first seven days in low birth weight neonates
