Alzheimerâs disease is of growing concern to clinicians and researchers throughout the world. There is an increasing need to collaborate with European partners to facilitate a better understanding through research and practice. Sharing information about management, treatment and research with English and French universities and hospitals is helpful in forging links and promoting best practice. Such links have been established between lâUniversité Nanterre, France and Bournemouth University, UK in order to encourage collaborative research into dementia.
Following discussions and conferences between lâUniversité Nanterre, France and Bournemouth University, UK the author presents research findings together with an overview of management and treatment approaches practiced in the UK. This was presented at lâUniversité Nanterre, France on 15 March 2011 and is reproduced here (Illustrations 1-21) so that the information may be used to teach students and professionals about advances in Alzheimerâs disease research and clinical practice. Acknowledgement is made to Jansen-Cilag UK for the schematic on the mechanism of acetylcholine esterase inhibitors, in particular, Reminyl. Illustration 22 helps to illustrate the presence of senile plaques, and Illustration 23, neurofibrillary tangles, which are detailed in the presentation. Video 1 is a podcast by the author which is an overview and useful resource.
Closer links and collaborative approaches between universities and hospitals across Europe can help in the advancement of our knowledge of Alzheimerâs disease and in finding better management approaches.
