Building skills of minority doctoral students to appply health behavior theories: a case study

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

    The main claim is to improve the preparation of minority students in conducting health behavior research.  I think this aim is important for all health education or public health student, and not just for minority students.


  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    I don't believe the intent of basing research on sound theory, and using theory in designing research studies is a novel idea.  All behavior change research should be based on proven theoories that have been proven to work in changing various behaviors.


  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes.


  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes. 


  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    N/A


  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    This is not a research paper, but a paper explaining a teaching strategy for engaging students in research using various theories.


  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    No.  the paper is long enough in explaining their curriculum. 


  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    No.  I think it's a lot for students to learn in one quarter, and even one semester.  It looks like it could be a 2 quarter/semester course easily which would give students more time to operationalize theory.

    Looks like a good course, but as stated earlier....a lot for students to learn in one course.

     

    I don't understand why it is labeled just for minority students?  What cultural factors are unique to minorities that set this course aside just for them.  It seems like a generic course for all students.
