Assessment of Food and Inhalant Allergens in Allergic Patients from Jeddah City: Saudi Arabia
Posted by Dr. Ahmad M Suabhi on 14 Sep 2016 11:52:03 AM GMT Reviewed by Author Invited Reviewers

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Authors assessed the most common allergens of food and inhalant in 209 patients in Jeddah city presented toAlborj Laboratory. The work is locally ofhigh importance

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    Yes

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Yes

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    Yes

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

Little as mentioned in the comment slot no. 9 below

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

    Locally yes indeed

  • Other Comments:

    a) The author is advised to correlate between the nature of the city and the most common allergen as he already did similar projects in the other main 2 cities in the western region of Saudi Arabia, which are Makkah and Taif along with the current work in Jeddah. This is because Makkah is a valley, Jeddah is off coast and Taif is on the top of a mountain

    b) After specifying the most common food and inhalant allergens, it would be more practical to start relating them together. This is practical to follow the needed precautions which should be also addressed by the author to avoid the negative effects of those allergens

    c) The word “Assessment” would be clearer than “Sensitization” in the main title

    d) Illustration 9 should turn into Table 1 and move to the beginning just prior to Table 2

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

The manuscript described the prevalence of sensitization to inhalant and food allergens in Jeddah city. The data are of value for clinical diagnosis and intervention of atopic diseases.

    (1) The manuscript could be rewritten and shortened by focusing on key points.

    (2) More details about alergic patients could be provided.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

In this study authors aimed to assess the prevalence of sensitization to common inhalant and food allergens among 209 patients with allergic symptoms in Jeddah city. Among aeroallergens, mites indoor allergens were the most common which followed by American cockroaches, cat dander, pollens and then molds. The most common indoor allergen was Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus followed by Dermatophagoides farinae. The most common allergen of pollens was Cynodon dactylon and the most prevalent mold allergen was Alternaria tenuis. The common food allergen was peanut followed by cocoa, egg white, cow milk, chocolate, wheat flour, pistachio nut, goat milk and then cod fish.

Authors concluded that reactivity to aeroallergens such as house dust mites, grasses, American cockroaches, and cat dander were found to be high. Meanwhile, the common food allergens was found to be peanut followed by cocoa, egg white, cow milk, and chocolate among patients testing positive for specific IgE.

These findings are of regional importance.

Only on the global sensitization to certain allergens

  • Other Comments:

These descriptive findings show regionally limited importance. In general, the manuscript is scientifically well-composed, abstract agrees with main text, method is well-designed, and references are quite suitable.

However, it needs some improvement before final composition is reached.

Thus, some terms are unnecessary shown in initial capital letters within a sentence (like Allergens).

Some allergens names that correspond to biological Latin ones (botanic names) should be shown rather in italic characters.

The term “Dermatophagoides farina” should be “Dermatofagoides farinae” - (farine in genitive).

There are unnecessary free spaces between words and comas or full stops, missing free spaces between consecutive sentences (or between superscripted citation and consecutive sentence), or multiple free spaces between consecutive words within the same sentence.

At abstract, in the aim should be specified the term “sensitization” in “the assessment of prevalence to common inhalant and food allergens”.

The second sentence of conclusions in the abstract shows a strong similarity to last sentence of results. Maybe it should be mentioned if Jeddah allergies or sensitizations shows similarities or not to another cities of the region.

The term introduction could be postponed in the next row in order to be placed at the top of column during page composition as pdf format.

In the main text the subtitle “results” should be shown as format uniformly to other subtitles. Its order is equally to introduction, method, or discussion subtitles and should be shown without colon. The same requests belong to “conclusion” subtitle.

At the part of tables and figures, their illustration should be shown in right order (table 1 should be shown before table 2 and table 3).

    Good luck!
