Diabetes mellitus: a complete ancient and modern historical perspective
Posted by Dr. Mahbubur Rahman on 20 Mar 2015 01:51:06 PM GMT Reviewed by WMC Editors

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

This review article claims to explore the timeline of diabetes journey with a complete ancient and modern historical perspective, and correct the inconsistencies in the historical perspectives of diabetes with intent to project the
future. The paper certainly is an important document to explore and compile different historical mile stones for the recognition, description of difeerent aspects of disease and advancement in managemnt and treatment of the disease.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

This is a review article. Although it is not an original article, considering compilation of different important articles in the field of Diabetes Mellitus it is an important and novel approach

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Yes. I could not find any article other than this, which tried to review articles to picture a historical perspective of Diabetes Mellitus

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

The article is a good collection of different articles on Diabetes Mellitus. But to claim the intention to project the
    future is not well supported

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    Not Applicable

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    It is a review article

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

It would be better if the paper sub divided more into different historical perspective; like exploration of cause, clinical feature, diagnosis and mamnagemnt in different sections. Some time I found it difficult to compile with so many different aspects of historical perspectives in the same section. Sometime it might loosen reader's interest and concentration.

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

I think its an important document for compilation of different works in the field of Diabetes mellitus with a historical perspective

  • Other Comments:

Need to be more careful in referencing. In some places listing of referencing missing. In some other instances, some inconsistancies seen in referencing;e.g. In page 11: in 1974, a purified form of animal insulin was produced by chromatographic techniques (Steiner & Oyer 1967).

Also, tables should be placed in right position or need to be mentioned correctly within the writeup. Also tables should be better visualized
