Spirometry and arterial blood gases in acute severe asthma

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

To find correlations between blood gases parameters and pulmonary function in patients with acute severe asthma.

Data will be useful in every day clinical practice.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

    No.

    Wagner PD, Hedenstierna G, Rodriguez-Roisin R. Eur Respir J. 1996 Jun;9(6):1278-82. Review.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

    Yes

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    This is an observational survey

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

It is not clear how they performed the diagnosis of asthma. It seems that some patients were ACOS(asthma COPD overlap syndrome)

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

It is unclear in how many cases the reversibility test was done. How many patients are smoking?

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

It will be interesting discussing these data in a workshop.

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Authors claim that there is a weak correlation between gas exchange, acid base status and magnitude of airway obstruction.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

No. This has been already shown by Mountain et al Chest. 1990;98(3):651-655. doi:10.1378/chest.98.3.651

This is an addition to the existing literature. Therefore, I think I would like to mention it in my lecture on this subject.
