Review of Aesthetic Closure of Anterior Spaces in Mature Dentition
Posted by Dr. George Raymond on 15 Jan 2014 07:02:44 PM GMT Reviewed by WMC Editors

  • What are the main claims of the paper and how important are they?

Dr Durrani reviews a dilemma that is often encountered in dental pratice.  An overall, yet brief review of materials are presented and a case report follows.  The illustrations are helpful to those who are in the earlier stages of their dental education.  There are clear and concise instructions throughout the case report and it was written in the same fashion.

  • Are these claims novel? If not, please specify papers that weaken the claims to the originality of this one.

Not a novel claim since it is a somewhat common issue dentists deal with but nonetheless was a good article.

  • Are the claims properly placed in the context of the previous literature?

Yes. There are multiple ways to deal with a diastema depending on the size of the diastema, periodontal condition, age of patient and patient's expectations.

  • Do the results support the claims? If not, what other evidence is required?

    Yes

  • If a protocol is provided, for example for a randomized controlled trial, are there any important deviations from it? If so, have the authors explained adequately why the deviations occurred?

    NA

  • Is the methodology valid? Does the paper offer enough details of its methodology that its experiments or its analyses could be reproduced?

    NA

  • Would any other experiments or additional information improve the paper? How much better would the paper be if this extra work was done, and how difficult would such work be to do, or to provide?

    No

  • Is this paper outstanding in its discipline? (For example, would you like to see this work presented in a seminar at your hospital or university? Do you feel these results need to be incorporated in your next general lecture on the subject?) If yes, what makes it outstanding? If not, why not?

This topic would be valuable to a dental student or resident.  Often times they encounter a situation like this and a review of the different options etc is valuable to someone in the earlier stages of dentla education.

  • Other Comments:

Overall, well written article and case report.  More detail could have been presented when reviewing the various materials but in the context given was a well written case report.  I feel this is an excellent article to be presented to dental students/residents.

  • Other Comments:

In providing aesthetic restorations for a patient, the practitioner must select certain composite resin materials. Certain essential features for these aesthetic materials include polishability, fracture toughness, modulus of elasticity and shrinkage.

A very thorough case report is provided by the author.  The ideals of smile design are also discussed with respect to diastema closure.
